"Be in the Moment"

I got my e-issue of USAT's newsletter this afternoon and the first thing that caught my eye was this very relevant article from David Glover. After last weekend, I think this is definitely something to keep in mind as we head into the race. Enjoy!

We are so close...

Just a few more days until you are all super triathletes! Seriously! That's what you will be after completing Wildflower!
Make sure you are hydrating and resting. No last minute cramming!
You are not going to improve your fitness in the next few days. If you are wanting to workout more, but it is not on your schedule.... don't do it. More is not better at this point.
If you need any last minute assistance, contact your mentor.
Relax, sleep, hydrate...
See you at Wildflower!

Mentor Highlight ~ Patti

Patti Gray

This upcoming race marks Patti's third Wildflower Triathlon (She will turn 54 a week after WF) and her 6th season with Team In Training. Patti joined Team In Training in 2006 when she was looking to get in shape and her boss asked her to join Team Bender. She needed something to get passionate about and to get her away from the TV. TNT was the perfect fit! She has stayed involved because she loves the friends she has made and the great Team Spirit. Patti has been touched by the cause and the honorees she has met. She is training and racing in honor of Trevor Kott, Drake Bowers, and Scott Brisbin.

Although Patti is most comfortable in the swim, her favorite part of triathlon is the finish. Of course!

Need-to-know about Patti:
  • Hero? Jen Ironwoman!
  • Best advice received? Live, Love & Laugh
  • Family? I have 3 beautiful grandsons ages 4; 1; and 7 months and I'm grateful for their health everyday.

Mentor Highlights ~ Jackie

Jacqueline Claire Dotson

Two years ago, Jackie (a former figure skater!) decided to try out a new sport. She joined the inaugural Wildflower Triathlon team and was hooked. After Wildflower, Jackie went on to complete at least 10 additional triathlons. She is back for her third shot at WF Olympic and well on her way to a personal record breaking year.

How did she get involved in Team In Training?...
"I was feeling socially isolated at my job, sluggish from sitting all day. At the time I was actually contemplating going back into figure skating. At the time I found TNT, my friend Jimmy, who has leukemia, wasn't doing very well. and also had wanted to try an endurance event for years, so it was kismet! I picked triathlon because I grew up riding my bike all over Brooklyn and I spent most of my summer days in the Atlantic Ocean. As for the run? Eh. Two out of Three ain't bad!"
Jackie has plenty of reasons to keep training an racing. Shetrains in honor of lifetime neighbor Jimmy Filippelli who has been battling CLL since 1997. She also trains in memory of three friends who lost their battles to cancer: Roberto Reburiano (myeloma in 2005), Bill Lemke (CLL in 2001) and Leoncio Tiburcio (leukemia in 1996).

Jackie is very excited to be back on the team this year. Last year she had a lot of personal challenges with her dog being so sick that it hampered her enjoyment, but now she is back, running fairly pain-free and has a new puppy (a dachsund-yorkie mutt named Piment=French for chili pepper) to keep her on her toes. :)

Some facts-to-know about Jackie...

  • Favorite part of triathlon: swim start
  • Least favorite? swim to bike transition
  • Hero? Richard Branson, but Jen Mathe is my triathlon hero.
  • Best advice received? You get what you expect in life. So expect a lot!
